Eugène Ionesco’s “The Bald Soprano” by the “Dodeka kai Kati” Theatre Group

The “Dodeka kai Kati” Theatre Group presents one of the most iconic works of the Theatre of the Absurd, “The Bald Soprano” by Eugène Ionesco, in four performances at ARTOS HOUSE in Nicosia, on 30 and 31 October and 1 and 4 November 2026, at 8:00 p.m.

The production is participating in the 39th Amateur Theatre Festival of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC).

Written in 1950, “The Bald Soprano” is one of the plays that helped define the Theatre of the Absurd and established Eugène Ionesco as one of the most important figures in modern European theatre.

In a seemingly ordinary middle-class living room, everyday conversations, social conventions and clichés gradually begin to lose their logical coherence. Words become detached from their meaning, communication breaks down, and the familiar is transformed into the absurd, revealing with humour and sharpness the difficulty people face in truly communicating with one another.

By subverting language and the conventions of everyday life, Ionesco creates a biting satire of social conformity and mechanical human communication in a play that, more than 75 years after it was written, remains strikingly relevant.

The production is directed by Andreas Koutsoumbas, with set and costume design by Sosanna Tomazou. Elena Antoniou is responsible for movement, Konstantina Iakovou for sound, Achilleas Mouskis for lighting, and Charis Panayiotou for photography. The set was constructed by Iakovos Iakovou.

The cast, in order of appearance, includes: Anna Konstantinou, Konstantinos Iakovou, Maria Kividiotou, Christodoulos Georgiou, Gabriella Chatzistylli and Niki Cheila.
