Easter Wishes During Cyprus’s Most Complex Election Campaign

Easter ahead of the most complex election contest in the history of the Republic of Cyprus felt like both a crucifixion and a resurrection for communication consultants, candidates and campaign teams.

Municipal and community elections were approaching, yet residents of some Cypriot communities still did not know that their area would merge with a municipality or neighbouring village. The state’s public information may have fallen short, but this gave campaign teams an opportunity to provide useful explanations about what citizens would vote for and whom they would elect.

With just over a month until polling day, voters would elect members of the European Parliament, mayors, municipal councils, district governors, community leaders, community councils and deputy mayors.

This was the moment for social media to work alongside traditional campaigning: door-to-door visits, leaflets, political gatherings, banners and posters.

Campaigns also needed to assess which news media could carry their messages effectively and present the candidate in the way voters expected—whether through newspapers, magazines, news websites, local media or nationwide outlets. This is where a campaign team must allow its communication consultant to work and be ready to consider professional recommendations.

Best wishes for the campaign—and happy Easter.
