You Have Our Vote. Now Let’s Get to Work

A greener Nicosia: turn empty plots into parks.

Nicosia, like many other cities in Cyprus, is experiencing increasing residential density. The lack of greenery in built-up areas is a serious problem affecting residents’ quality of life and the environment. One solution worth serious consideration is using empty plots as temporary green spaces until their owners begin construction.

I write these thoughts primarily as a resident and only secondarily as a communication consultant. My 15 years in journalism and 17 years in communication inevitably shape my perspective. Although I focus on Nicosia because I experience it every day, the issue concerns municipalities and communities across Cyprus.

Imagine every neighbourhood replacing neglected plots filled with rubbish, weeds, reptiles and rodents with green oases—places where children can play and adults and older residents can enjoy clean air, shade and rest. Beyond improving appearance, green plots offer many benefits:

• better air quality;
• lower temperatures through cooling microclimates, especially during summers exceeding 40°C;
• greater biodiversity by providing space for different plant species;
• soil protection, with plants reducing erosion and flood risk;
• greater protection from fires caused by illegal urban dumping;
• recreation and social cohesion through shared places for meeting, exercise and relaxation;
• a well-maintained environment that discourages illegal dumping.

To make this vision possible, legislation could require owners of empty residential plots to maintain them as green spaces until development begins. Owners would cover planting, irrigation and cleaning, while municipalities would inspect compliance. Alternatively, where an owner fails to act, a municipality could create and maintain a temporary park and charge the cost to the owner.

Turning empty plots into green oases is a realistic and sustainable response to the shortage of urban greenery and the visual damage caused by neglect. It benefits the environment, health, quality of life and social cohesion while giving every neighbourhood a cooler, more attractive shared space.

It is time to see empty plots not as useless dumping grounds but as potential green lungs for our city. Municipalities, citizens and owners should work together to make Nicosia greener, cleaner and more beautiful.

We voted for a mayor present in the streets and communities, dealing with everyday problems—not another mayor confined to offices and photographs.
